The Vegetable Growing Year: Jobs to do in November

The nights are drawing in and the days are getting colder. Thankfully there isn’t much to do on the plot at this time of year, so if you’ve got any projects or changes you want to make, now is the time to do it.

Digging
As with October, November is the perfect time to dig over any vacant beds. Avoid digging them over when the ground is frozen or wet as it will be hard work. After digging over the soil, apply some manure or if the soil needs it, some lime.

Clean your pots
Take the opportunity to clean any pots or containers that are not been used. To clean them, use a little warm water and detergent to remove any left over soil and pests that may be lurking in them. If you’ve got any terracotta pots, give them a clean and protect them from the frosts. They tend to break in the winter months.

What to harvest
Most of your crops should now be in storage; however there are a few things you can still harvest:

You can harvest parsnips as and when required, although they taste better after the first frost.

Winter cabbages, cauliflowers and Brussels sprouts can also be harvested when required. Cauliflowers will easily keep in the fridge for a couple of weeks if wrapped in cling film.

Your leeks should now be ready to harvest. Harvest them as required as they are hardy enough to survive outside during the winter.
